July Tale: “It Gets Dark in Here Too”
My submission for Neil Gaiman’s “A Calendar of Tales.” What struck me the most about the July tale (besides the awesome image of an igloo made out of books) is how that igloo is meant to symbolize running away from your problems. The protagonist literally runs away from their life and hides in a world of books. Once they’re inside all they want to do is see the Northern lights, to see their wife again, but they’re too busy hiding in the dark (albeit comfortable) world they’ve created for themselves to really change anything. At the end of the tale they finally leave and face the real, bright, sunny world out there, and are better for it.
